More Awards + Recognition Programs

In addition to the Green Cleaning Award for Schools & Universities, the programs and awards listed below recognize schools for outstanding achievement in protecting health and the environment. We encourage schools to apply to these awards to promote their green cleaning program, learn from past award winners and give their staff the recognition they deserve!

Green Ribbon Schools

The U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools program recognizes public and private K-12 schools that create healthy and sustainable learning environments and teach environmental literacy. One of the key criteria for recognized schools is a green cleaning program. Green Ribbon schools save energy, reduce costs, protect health and employ environmentally sustainable practices.

Evaluation criteria include:

  • Certified green cleaning products and services
  • Custodial programs based on effective management and “green” service
  • Whether the school is moving toward certification with the ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard, the Green Seal Standard for Commercial and Institutional Cleaning Services, GS-42 or equivalent standard
  • Whether a school uses a chemical purchasing policy, low or no VOC products, chemical handling and storage policies

American Lung Association AFSI Champion Award

The American Lung Association’s Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative  (AFSI) Champion program recognizes schools that are dedicated to the health and safety of their entire school communities through effective asthma school management programs and policies. ASFI aligns with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Coordinated School Health Model. Gold and Silver AFSI Champion awards are granted to schools that create asthma-friendly environments through education, advocacy and research.

School populations face a host of issues directly related to asthma including potential asthma emergencies, absenteeism, student and teacher productivity, health office visits and access to life-saving medications. A green cleaning program with improved indoor air quality is directly related to asthma management. In fact, Champion schools must proactively maintain healthy indoor air quality (IAQ) and use integrated pest management policies.

cefpiCEFPI School of the Future Student Design Competition

The Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI)  Future Student Design Competition is a unique chance for students themselves to get in on the action. This competition is open to middle school students. Teams are challenged to re-design their schools to enhance learning, conserve resources, be environmentally responsive and engage the surrounding community. Students, with the guidance of a school teacher, must follow a planning process from concept to completion and prove so with thorough documentation and a jury presentation. This is an opportunity to get students and teachers involved in planning and implementing a green cleaning program, in addition to other healthy, safe and sustainable school programs.
